On the other hand, fertile females in the 5 mg/kg/day group and infertile females in the 50 mg/kg/day group at estrus or estrus-like stage in a perinatal and juvenile exposure study exhibited dose-dependent decreases in serum FSH level accompanied by significantly increased E 2 /progesterone ratio due to a decrease in progesterone level ( Chapin et al., 1997 ). In that study, FSH level of proestrus females whose fertility remained almost normal in the 5 mg/kg/day group was comparable to that in the control group. Suzuki et al. (2004) reported that the LH surge of female rats in the evening of proestrus was significantly attenuated by perinatal dietary exposure to methoxychlor at dose levels of 24 ppm and above. A significant decrease in serum LH level, but not FSH and E 2 , was also seen in diestrus young adult female rats gavaged with methoxychlor for 2 weeks ( Quignot et al., 2012 ). The likely cause of such alterations is based on the estrogenic activity of methoxychlor and/or HPTE to the brain, as described previously.
