This is the scenario: a guy, say age 21, becomes serious about gaining muscle. He’s 5′ 10″, 7″ wrists, 9″ ankles, average genetics for muscle size-and-proportioned. He’s played sports, but never done more than an occasional resistance workout. Now, he begins a good training-eating-and-resting program. With his genetics, he has the potential for naturally gaining 45 pounds of lean mass if he stays consistent with progressive training/proper eating for a continuous 3 to 4 years.
But, about three months after beginning his training, he starts taking steroids. He does three steroid cycles in the following 18 months, and includes proper post-cycle therapy. That entire time, he’s continuing to consistently train and eat properly. Before the end of two years, he’s gained 45 pounds of lean mass (which with steroids, by the way, is not necessarily typical but neither improbable). At that point, he permanently quits using steroids, but he does continue properly training and eating for another two years. At the end of four years, he carries the same 45 pounds of lean mass.

There are numerous forms of anabolic androgenic steroids and each one carries its own list of possible side-effects; while there are often strong similarities there are also unique factors to eachsteroid. Further, we cannot simply say “XYZ” steroid will cause such and such adverse reactions; possible side-effects mean just that, “possible” and by no means implies guaranteed. We must look at what the possible side-effects are, what the probability of such an effect occurring is, what we can do to prevent them and what we can do to reverse them should they occur. These are all important factors that are often left ignored in anabolic steroid discussion and that is irresponsible.

Dianabol is a relatively strong estrogenic anabolic steroid due to the moderate level of aromatase activity it carries. While its aromatase activity is only moderate, this conversion actually leads Methandrostenolone to be converted to methylestradiol rather than estradiol, which is far more powerful than estradiol. This can make side effects like gynecomastia and water retention very possible with this steroid; in fact, they can appear seemingly overnight. Heavy water retention can also promote high blood pressure, which Dianabol is notorious for causing. Such effects can be controlled, and when it comes to high blood pressure this is something you’ll need to put some effort into ensuring does not become a problem.

In order to combat the estrogenic side effects of Dianabol, anti- estrogens are commonly recommended when supplementing with this steroid. You have two choices in anti-estrogens, Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERM’s) like Nolvadex ( Tamoxifen Citrate ) and Aromatase Inhibitors (AI’s) like Femara ( Letrozole ). SERM’s can be enough for some men and should be your first choice if they can get the job done. However, AI’s will be far more effective as they will directly inhibit aromatization and reduce serum estrogen levels. Unfortunately, AI’s can negatively affect cholesterol, as can Dianabol, and when conjoined this can prove potentially problematic. If an AI is used cholesterol management will be a priority, and it will be possible. However, SERM’s, while not always as effective will actually promote healthier cholesterol levels due to their estrogenic like activity in the liver.

I will be doing one more tested meet in January and then I am considering TRT which will disqualify me from competing natural. I am also 43 and honestly, at a point where I just may give up power-lifting all together, or go with testosterone. We will see…. I need to do more research, which is why I love your blog so much. You have been quiet lately. Um… I personally think anyone who has the audacity to call themselves Alpha-Destiny is a tool regardless of what they do. Also, for the record, I think he looks like shit. Steroids or not, I train with some of the worlds best (and a lot use, a lot don’t. Most of them are pretty honest about it.) and if this guy came into our gym with that name, he would most likely be laughed out of the place. Alpha-Destiny… I would kick my own ass if I went with that name. Sit down little fella… the grown-ups are talking.
